Keita Takahashi, the genius behind Katamari Damacy and Noby Noby Boy is working on a new project. That alone is exciting news for fans of his bizarre, stylized games. But his collaborators on this project are 2 of the folks responsible for ThatGameCompany’s Journey, the critical darling that debuted on the Playstation Network last year.
Takahashi announced the new project at the Horizon indy games event, an alternative event that happened during E3 and showcased smaller indy and “art game” titles. The new game is being produced by Funomena, co-founded by Robin Hunicke and Martin Middleton who both worked on Journey. Funomena is based in San Francisco and was founded just recently, in January 2013.
While few details were given about the new game, Takahashi said his inspiration came from playing with his 2-year-old son and some blocks. The concept of the game is based around blocks coming to life.
Not much more is known about the title at this point, but considering the backgrounds of the folks working on it, the bar is set high. Keita Takahashi’s games are incredibly unique and stylish while still being loads of fun. Journey also oozes style and tells an emotional story without words. It’s one of the more compelling downloadables in recent years. With these talents working together, it’s fair to expect a lot.
