Phonosome is a fun, educational app. It’s purpose is to demonstrates how genetics work by letting your phones breed with one another.
This is achieved by you creating a face on your iPhone, iTouch and iPad devices and then ‘breeding’ it with another device. The genetic calculations are carried out using well-established genetic principles and rules that are taught in science at GCSE level in the UK.
When running Phonosome, each device gets a pair of chromosomes (hence the app name) that hold an imaginary length of DNA which is made up of a series of genes. These genes control the visible traits of the face which you create on your screen.
When two devices are brought together they ‘breed’ and create offspring. When this happens they effectively swap their chromosomes wirelessly. The genes from each device are analysed and processed using Mendel's Law and produce a new chromosome pair which then creates a new 'off spring' face on your screen. This face contains the genetic material from both of the original 'parent' faces.
The hope is this app might help inspire an interest in genetic science and how it affects us and our family.
