The Motorola Droid Bionic – possibly the most over-hyped Android phone of the year, is finally set to make its debut this September. As you can expect, Verizon will launch a colossal Droid ad campaign, most of which start out terribly vague and eventually advertise the phone once officially launched. The ad below is a ‘hype’ ad, which looks like it has the potential to be an interesting video game, but sadly not a good phone ad.
Since the Droid line is largely aimed at males, we’re not surprised to see an attractive woman in the forefront, with a kick-ass Alice from Resident Evil attitude going on. Maybe a little bit of Lara Croft in there, too. After a short strut on the catwalk, the girl unsheathes a sword and readies for battle with.. a machine. During the short combat scene, the words “rule all machines” appears on the screen. The message is obviously saying that the Bionic is the phone of phones. Rigght.
Given the wait for this handset, the Droid Bionic better perform like a champ when it is released, as people have been waiting since January. After some battery tweaking and a major redesign, the Bionic is hardly the phone we held at CES, and the redesign is more than welcomed. The handset still holds a strong following, and we’ll soon be able to really put the Bionic through the tests to see if it’s been worth the wait, and worth the two years you’ll be tied to it.
Now that the Galaxy S 2 won’t be coming to Verizon, the Bionic may be the best Android phone available in September. We do know that a similar phone will be on its way, and if we’re lucky, it’ll be the Nexus Prime. This would be the only real justification for not releasing the GS2, but that’s not here nor there.
Considering that the iPhone 5 is right around the corner, Android needs multiple solid handsets to maintain the insane lead it has over iOS and the rest of the competition. I’m not sure if the Bionic is the phone to have at the helm but it’s coming either way, and hopefully it will actually live up to the hype.
