BlackBerry Curve 3G 9300 and Bold 9700 OS Update Enables Rogers UMA

A software update for the Rogers BlackBerry Curve 9300 and Bold 9700 will enable the handsets to make calls over Wi-Fi using UMA. Rogers is the only carrier in Canada to offer such UMA service, branded as TalkSpot (although soon to be renamed Rogers Wi-Fi Calling). BlackBerry dominates the list of UMA-supporting devices on Rogers, going as far back as the 8820, then up to the Curve 8320, Pearl 8210, Pearl Flip 8220 and the Curve 8900. The only non-BlackBerry that supports Rogers TalkSpot is the rather bland Nokia 6086.

The new device support is great news for those who have crappy reception in their house, but for folks who are looking for a full-blown home phone replacement, you can pay $15/month to get unlimited Canada-wide calling when within a Wi-Fi zone. Hit up the Rogers TalkSpot page for details, or go to the Community Forums for details on how to update your Bold 9700 or Curve 9300, though lots of you have probably received on-device wireless update notifications by now.
